Start with where the sign will be viewed
A lightbox should be sized from the real viewing distance, not from a convenient sheet size. A reception sign viewed from a few metres can use finer typography than a storefront sign intended to be recognised from across a road. Measure the available wall or fascia area, then consider how much of that space is actually visible once shutters, awnings, columns, neighbouring signs and traffic are taken into account.
Before artwork is finalized, share a straight site photo and approximate viewing distances. This helps determine whether the logo, business name and any supporting line will remain readable in the actual environment.
Choose single-sided or double-sided construction deliberately
Wall-mounted lightboxes are usually viewed from the front, while projecting signs may need branding on both faces. Double-sided construction changes the frame, lighting arrangement, mounting method and weight, so it should be decided before fabrication begins.
For projecting signs, also check pedestrian clearance, nearby cables, building rules and wind exposure. The sign may be visually small but still require a strong bracket and reliable fixing points.
Match the face material to size and application
Acrylic faces work well for many compact and medium illuminated signs because they provide a clean rigid surface. Larger signs may use other illuminated face systems where a very large rigid sheet would be impractical. The correct choice depends on dimensions, frame construction, access for maintenance and whether the sign is indoors or exposed to weather.
Do not select the face material only from a visual sample. Ask how it will be fixed, how it behaves at the planned size and how easily it can be removed later if LEDs or graphics need servicing.
Plan for even illumination, not just high brightness
A good lightbox should appear evenly illuminated instead of showing bright LED points, dark corners or visible strip patterns. Cabinet depth, LED spacing, face diffusion and the distance between the light source and face all affect the result.
More brightness is not always better. Indoor reception signage can become uncomfortable if it is excessively bright, while outdoor signs need enough output to remain legible against surrounding shop lighting. The goal is consistent, readable illumination for the actual location.
Design artwork for day and night readability
Artwork that looks strong on a monitor can lose clarity when illuminated. Thin letters, low-contrast color combinations and very detailed logos can become harder to recognise once light passes through or reflects from the sign face. Keep important wording large enough, preserve clear spacing and avoid overloading the face with secondary information.
If the sign must communicate a phone number, floor number or short service line, test it at a reduced preview size and from a distance. Long lists of services usually belong elsewhere rather than on the primary illuminated sign.
Confirm power access before fabrication
LED lightboxes need a realistic cable route, driver location and safe connection point. A finished sign should not arrive on site before anyone has decided where power will come from or how the cable will enter the cabinet.
Share information about nearby power points, concealed wiring restrictions and whether the sign is connected to a timer, switch or building lighting circuit. For outdoor locations, electrical components and cable entry need protection appropriate to the exposure.
Treat mounting and maintenance as part of the product
The mounting method depends on wall material, sign weight, projection and access. Concrete, brick, ACP fascia, metal structure and interior partition walls do not all accept the same fixing method. Large or elevated signs may also require access equipment and a planned installation sequence.
Maintenance access matters too. LEDs, drivers and graphics can eventually need replacement, so the cabinet should not be designed in a way that makes routine servicing unnecessarily destructive or expensive.
Outdoor signs need weather and heat planning
Outdoor lightboxes face rain, dust, heat, UV exposure and repeated temperature changes. Frame construction, drainage, face retention, cable entry and electrical protection should reflect those conditions. A sign located under a deep canopy has different exposure from one mounted directly on an exterior facade.
Tell the fabricator where the sign will be installed instead of simply requesting an 'outdoor lightbox'. Site context helps determine the practical construction and reduces avoidable failures later.
What to send for a useful quotation
For a faster and more accurate quotation, send the required width and height, quantity, installation location, indoor or outdoor use, single- or double-sided requirement, site photos, approximate mounting height, logo or artwork, and whether installation is required. Mention any building or mall restrictions you already know about.
If exact dimensions are not yet confirmed, provide the available wall or fascia measurement and a clear photo with a reference dimension. It is better to resolve size, fixing and power questions before production than to alter a finished illuminated sign on site.
