Choose letter size from viewing distance, not from the logo file

A logo can look perfectly balanced on a laptop and still become unreadable once it is installed several metres above a storefront. Start with the real fascia or wall dimensions, the approximate viewing distance and the angle from which customers approach the sign. The business name or primary wordmark normally needs to remain recognizable before smaller supporting information is considered.

Share a straight site photo and at least one known measurement before finalizing size. This makes it easier to estimate realistic letter height, spacing and overall sign width without relying on guesswork from a cropped photograph.

Understand what makes lettering truly three-dimensional

Dimensional signage is built with physical depth rather than simply printing a flat graphic. The face, side return and backing or mounting system together create the finished letter. Depth affects appearance, shadow, lighting behavior, weight and how the sign is fixed to the building.

Very shallow letters can suit refined indoor reception walls, while deeper constructions may be more appropriate for illuminated exterior signs. The right depth depends on the design and installation rather than on a single standard measurement.

Acrylic and metal create different results

Acrylic is widely used for clean faces, built-up lettering and illuminated elements. Metal can provide a more architectural appearance and is useful where stronger returns, metallic finishes or durable exterior construction are required. Many signs combine materials rather than using only one.

Material choice should consider the desired finish, letter size, exposure, weight and maintenance. Ask how the face and returns will be joined and how the finished letters will be serviced later, especially when lighting is included.

Front-lit and halo-lit signs communicate differently

Front-lit letters emit light through or from the face, creating a bright direct presentation that can work well for retail visibility. Halo-lit letters project light toward the wall behind them, producing a softer outline around each letter. The wall color, distance from the surface and surrounding ambient light all influence how a halo effect appears.

Do not choose lighting only from a reference image. A bright shopping street, sheltered office entrance and dark reception wall need different approaches. If possible, provide both daytime and evening site photos so the lighting style can be considered in context.

Simplify artwork before fabrication

Some logo details that reproduce easily in print are too thin or too small to fabricate reliably as dimensional letters. Narrow strokes, tiny counters, closely spaced characters and delicate decorative elements can create problems with cutting, assembly, illumination and long-term durability.

The fabricator should review the vector artwork at the intended physical size. Where necessary, small adjustments can preserve the overall brand appearance while making the sign technically producible. These changes should be approved before fabrication begins.

Spacing and alignment are part of the finished quality

Individual letters can look uneven if their baseline, spacing or logo relationship changes during installation. A full-size placement template, measured drilling pattern or other controlled layout method helps maintain the approved composition on site.

This is especially important for long names, multiple lines and combined logo-plus-wordmark installations. Confirm the total installed width and height, not only the size of each individual character.

Plan the mounting surface before production

Concrete, brick, ACP fascia, glass, tile, wood and interior partition walls do not accept the same fixing method. The mounting system must account for the surface, letter weight, projection and access to the back of the installation area.

A clear site photo helps identify seams, cladding joints, windows, shutters and other obstacles that can interfere with fixing points. Large or high signs may also require scaffolding, a lift or other access equipment, which should be included in installation planning rather than discovered on the day.

Illuminated letters need cable and driver access

Lighting requires more than LEDs inside the letters. Power must reach the sign, cables need a sensible route and drivers or transformers must be positioned somewhere accessible for future replacement. Concealing every component permanently inside an inaccessible wall can turn a simple maintenance job into major repair work later.

Before fabrication, confirm where power comes from, where switching or timers are located and whether visible surface wiring is acceptable. Exterior installations also need electrical protection appropriate to rain, dust and heat exposure.

Exterior signs need weather and maintenance planning

Outdoor dimensional letters face UV, rain, dust, heat, vibration and repeated temperature changes. Material finish, seams, cable entry, drainage and fixing points should suit the actual exposure. A sign under a deep canopy has different requirements from lettering mounted directly on an exposed facade.

Consider future cleaning and servicing as well. A sign that cannot be safely reached after installation may become expensive to maintain even if the initial fabrication is good.

What to send for a useful quotation

Send the logo or wordmark, preferred overall width or available wall/fascia dimensions, quantity, installation location, indoor or outdoor use, approximate mounting height, site photos, preferred illuminated or non-illuminated style and whether installation is required. Vector artwork is ideal when available.
