Start by defining what evidence you need after interference

Tamper-evident labels are not all designed to fail in the same way. Some leave a visible VOID or patterned residue, some fracture or delaminate, and others are intended to bridge a closure so opening the package visibly damages the seal. The correct choice starts with the evidence you need after someone tries to remove, open or reposition the label.

Write the security objective in plain language before choosing material. Examples include showing that an electronics enclosure was opened, showing that a product cap or carton flap was disturbed, controlling access to a calibrated device, or recording whether a service warranty seal has been broken. That objective is more useful than simply asking for a 'security sticker'.

Match the material to the tamper behavior you need

VOID-transfer materials reveal a message or pattern when lifted from a compatible surface. Destructible films are designed to break into pieces rather than peel away cleanly. Other security constructions can delaminate or show a visible change after removal. Each approach creates a different type of evidence and behaves differently during application.

Do not select the material only from a sample photo. Ask how the label should behave when someone slowly peels it, pulls it quickly, uses a fingernail, or attempts to reposition it. The preferred failure mode should match the operational risk and the surface where the seal will be applied.

The application surface is part of the specification

Adhesive performance depends heavily on the actual surface. Smooth glass, painted metal, textured plastic, powder-coated metal, coated cartons and flexible packaging can behave very differently even when the same label stock is used. Surface energy, texture, contamination and curvature all affect adhesion.

Provide the printer with the real substrate whenever possible. If the label will be used across several product models or materials, list them. A security label that performs well on one smooth enclosure may fail to bond properly on another textured plastic, which can undermine the tamper evidence completely.

Cleanliness and application conditions affect security performance

Dust, oil, silicone residue, moisture and fingerprints can reduce adhesive contact. Create a simple application procedure for staff: clean the area if required, allow it to dry, position the label once, apply firm pressure and avoid touching the adhesive unnecessarily. Security features cannot compensate for careless application.

Temperature also matters. If labels are applied in a very cold warehouse, on warm equipment or in an environment with moisture, tell the supplier. The real application conditions should be considered during material selection and pilot testing.

Choose a size that protects the access point without inviting peeling

The label should cover or bridge the relevant access point while leaving enough adhesive area on each side for reliable bonding. A seal that barely reaches across a seam may lift too easily, while an unnecessarily large label can interfere with vents, controls, regulatory markings or product aesthetics.

Measure the usable flat area, not only the overall product dimension. For screws, lids, caps and enclosure seams, note the exact position and any nearby recesses or curves. Photos with measurements are often more useful than a generic size request.

Bridge seals need deliberate placement

When a label bridges a cap, flap, lid, door or enclosure seam, place it so normal opening forces must disturb the label. Avoid locations where the protected part can still be opened without affecting the seal. Placement is a security decision, not merely a branding decision.

For curved closures, check whether the label needs to bend around an edge and whether that bend creates stress that could lift the adhesive. A short pilot application on the real package can reveal these problems before a larger production run.

Use serial numbers when each seal needs an identity

Sequential serial numbers can turn a simple seal into a traceable control. They can be linked to a device, service ticket, asset number, batch or inspection record. If staff record which number was applied to which item, replacing a broken seal becomes a controlled event rather than an informal sticker replacement.

Define the numbering format before artwork approval. Decide whether numbers should be purely sequential, include prefixes, reflect branches or service centers, or map to an existing database field. Keep the source data structured and preserve the final issued sequence for audit purposes.

QR codes and barcodes are useful only when the workflow uses them

A QR code can link a seal to a verification page, service record, asset profile or internal form. A barcode can support inventory or service scanning. But adding a code does not automatically create security; the operational system behind the code determines whether it adds meaningful traceability.

Keep codes large enough for the intended scanner or phone, preserve the required quiet area and avoid placing important codes across folds or highly stressed areas. Test the final printed size rather than assuming a code that scans on a monitor will behave the same way on a small security label.

Keep branding secondary to the security function

Security seals often have very little printable area. Prioritize the information needed for identification and operation: company name or logo, warranty or security wording, serial number, service field and code if required. Decorative elements should not reduce legibility or make the label harder to inspect.

Use strong contrast and avoid tiny text. If the label may be inspected under poor lighting or inside equipment, test readability at the actual size. A visually impressive layout is not useful if technicians cannot read the serial or understand the seal condition.

Plan sheet or roll supply around how staff will apply the labels

Sheet supply can work well for smaller manual batches, service desks and mixed serial requirements. Roll supply can be more practical for repeated application in production or packing operations. The best format depends on volume, application speed, storage and whether labels need to be issued in controlled groups.

If roll labels will be used in a dispenser or applicator, confirm roll direction, core size and maximum roll diameter before production. Operational details like these can be as important as the label artwork.

Pilot test on the real product before a large run

Security-label testing should happen on the actual product, package or representative surface. Apply samples using the real procedure, allow appropriate dwell time, then attempt the types of interference you want the label to reveal. Check both adhesion and the visibility of the tamper evidence.

Also inspect what happens after removal. VOID residue may be desirable on a service seal but unacceptable on a premium reusable asset. Destructible material may create strong evidence but require more cleanup during authorized maintenance. The test should confirm the complete operational outcome, not only whether the sticker sticks.

Control replacement seals and exceptions

A security label loses value when replacement seals are distributed without control. Decide who can issue replacements, what record must be created, whether the old serial must be documented and how damaged-but-legitimate seals are handled. This is especially important for service centers, warehouses and multi-branch operations.

Keep spare labels secure and avoid giving large uncontrolled quantities to every user. When serial numbers are used, record destroyed, skipped or replaced numbers so the sequence remains understandable later.

What to send when requesting a quotation

Share the exact use case, application surface, finished label size, quantity, preferred tamper behavior if known, sheet or roll preference, serial-number requirement, barcode or QR requirement, artwork status and target delivery date. Include photos of the product or closure and identify the exact placement area.

If you are unsure which security construction is appropriate, describe what should happen when someone attempts to remove or open the protected item. That gives the printer a much stronger starting point than choosing a material from a catalog name alone.
